ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS - INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ

Thank you for your interest in applying to the LACHSA Music Department!  Please review the following requirements for applying to our department.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • The requirements below are subject to change.

  • All auditions, callbacks and/or portfolio reviews will be done in person unless otherwise noted and are subject to change for health and/or safety guidelines.

OVERVIEW   |  APPLICATION PROCESS

STEP ONE

Start preparing your two audition pieces of music. Fully complete and submit the LACHSA online application by Friday, January 17, 2025.

STEP TWO

Record videos of you performing your two pieces of music following the guidelines below. Submit your video recordings by Friday, January 17, 2025. 

STEP THREE

A limited number of applicants will be invited to a live callback audition at LACHSA on February 22, 2025. If granted a callback, see requirements below.

Please allow ample time to submit your online application and upload any required materials. Late or incomplete online applications will not be considered. The time and scheduling of auditions and callbacks is determined by the department and requests for specific audition times or dates cannot be accommodated. All auditions and/or callbacks will be held in person unless otherwise noted.

PLEASE NOTE - Auditions and callbacks are granted only if all general requirements for attending LACHSA have been met.

PRE-SCREEN VIDEOS   |  INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ

WHAT TO PLAY

  • Two (2) selections:

​

  • Each applicant will perform two (2) contrasting pieces or movements that are representative of technical ability.

​

  • Each applicant will Include a selection or movement in a SLOW tempo AND one in a LIVELY tempo.

​

*Jazz drum, jazz bass & jazz piano applicants have specific requirements outlined below.​​

HOW TO PERFORM

  • Dress nicely, as for an interview. 

​

  • Your face and body should be clearly seen. No one else should be in the video.

​

  • State your name and title at of the piece the beginning of each piece.

​

  • No other instruments or pre-recorded tracks should accompany your piece.​

HOW TO RECORD AND UPLOAD

  • Camera must be in a fixed position. 

​

  • Shoot in a well-lit, indoor location as in a recital or audition. 

​

  • Record song in a single take from start to finish. Do not edit tracks/videos together.​

​

  • Each piece will be recorded separately and uploaded to a file-sharing platform (ie. Vimeo, YouTube)

A link to upload your pre-screen videos will be sent to applicants after November 1, 2024.

 

VIDEO DISCLAIMER: Applicants MAY NOT submit professional video recordings. Smart phone videos are preferred. Professional recordings will be disqualified - professional editing of any type is strictly prohibited and will disqualify your application.

CALLBACKS   |  INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ

After successfully submitting the LACHSA application and pre-screen audition video, a limited number of applicants will be invited to participate in a live callback audition. During the callbacks, applicants will be asked to:

​

  • Perform the same piece(s) of music they submitted in pre-screen videos

  • Perform scales on their instrument (select your instrument in the drop-down menu below for specific requirements)

  • Demonstrate sight reading

  • Participate in a short interview with music faculty
