ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Thank you for your interest in applying to the LACHSA Dance Department!  Please review the following requirements for applying to our department.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • The requirements below are subject to change.

  • All 2021 campus activities including tours and auditions are subject to change due to COVID-19 guidelines.

OVERVIEW 

APPLICATION PROCESS

STEP ONE

Begin preparing your solo dance piece and required photos. Fully complete and submit the LACHSA online application by February 5, 2021.

STEP TWO

Record a 1-minute dance solo in any style and submit the video along with the two required photos described below. Examples of solos and photos are coming soon.

STEP THREE

A limited number of applicants will be invited to a callback audition on March 7th or 14th. If granted a callback, see requirements below.

Please allow ample time to upload your online application. Late or incomplete online applications will not be considered. Time and schedule for auditions to be determined by the number of applicants.  Audition day and time for each dancer will be assigned randomly. Dancers will audition on one day only, not both. Unfortunately, we cannot take requests for a specific day or time.

PLEASE NOTE - Auditions are granted only if all general requirements for attending LACHSA have been met. 

SOLO PRE-SCREEN AUDITION VIDEO

DANCE

WHAT TO PERFORM

ONE (1) solo dance:

  • Each applicant MUST perform (1) choreographed solo dance.

  • Solo Dance may be in any style.

  • Solo Dance should highlight the dancer's strengths, musicality and performance quality. 

  • Solo Dance must be no less than 45 seconds should not exceed 1 minute. 

HOW TO PERFORM

  • State your name at the beginning of your video.

  • Wear clothing that clearly shows the lines of your body and is appropriate for the style of dance you are performing.

  • Use pre-recorded music track for your dance solo.​ 

  • Your face and entire body must be clearly seen. No one else should be in the video.

HOW TO RECORD AND UPLOAD

  • Camera must be in a fixed position. 

  • Shoot in a well-lit area with lighting from the front. Can be indoors or outdoors. No backlight please.

  • Record your dance in a single take from start to finish. There should be no edits in your video.

VIDEO DISCLAIMER: Videos can be recorded on any kind of camera, smart phones included. Editing of any kind is strictly prohibited and will disqualify your application.

PRE-SCREEN PHOTO REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the solo video, applicants are required to submit two photos in the following ballet positions:

  • Tendu à la seconde

  • 1st Arabesque 

Ideally applicants should wear ballet attire in their photos. Photos must include entire body and can be taken with any kind of camera (smart phones included).

Here's what to expect when you arrive on the day of your audition:

INTERVIEW

PART 1:  BALLET

All students participate in a group audition. The group audition is conducted as follows:

  • Students participate in an excerpted ballet class to warm up.

  • The teacher will demonstrate four center ballet combinations and answer questions to clarify.

  • Dancers will perform the combinations in small groups.

PART 2: MODERN - HORTON

All students participate in a group audition. The group audition is conducted as follows:

  • Students will learn one modern Horton combination.

  • The teacher will demonstrate this combination, clarify expectations, and answer questions as needed.

  • Dancers will perform the combination in small groups.

PART 3: IMPROV & INTERVIEW

Students will also participate in the following:

  • Student will perform a short dance improvisation to music of their choice - not more than 30 seconds.

  • Students will introduce their improvisation describing what inspires their movement.

  • Student will have a brief interview. 

Applicants are expected to wear appropriate dance wear:

  • Feminine: leotard and tights; hair neatly up and pulled out of the face.

  • Masculine: black tights or form-fitting leggings and a form-fitting white t-shirt.

  • No watches or dangling jewelry.

  • Ballet slippers are recommended for all applicants. 

Applicants will evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Natural movement facility including coordination strength and flexibility

  • Musicality

  • Ability to take and apply direction

  • Expressiveness
