MUSIC AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Vocal Music Audition Requirements

MUSIC VOCAL (MV)

Students will be required to sing two (2) selections from memory. The first selection must be Caro Mio Ben or any selection from the 24 Italian Songs & Arias, ed. G. Schirmer or 26 Italian Songs, ed. John Paton.

The second selection can be any song from the classical, jazz, gospel or musical theatre repertoire. Suggested (not mandatory) “jazz” titles include Lullaby to Birdland, My Funny Valentine, and Almost Like Being in Love.

Students may provide their own accompanist or bring a high quality recorded accompaniment tape. There should be NO VOCALS on this recording. Students will also be required to display pitch recognition and sight-singing skills. A cappella is highly discouraged. Italian aria should be sung in Italian.

Music Instrumental (MI)

Jazz Instrumental Audition Requirements

All Instruments (except drums) must demonstrate the following abilities on their respective instrument in addition to the individual requirements:
  • All Major Scales (2 or more octaves where applicable)
  • Chromatic Scale (Covering the full range of the instrument)
  • Sight Reading (You will be given approximately 2 minutes to review the piece before read through)
Individual Requirements

Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone

Students must prepare two selections from the titles below:
  • Billies Bounce “(F” Concert) – Charlie Parker
  • Blue Monk (“Bb” Concert) – Thelonious Monk
  • Sandu (“Eb” concert) – Clifford BrownTenor Madness (“Bb” Concert) – Sonny Rollins
Focus: Note accuracy, time, and improvisation (optional)

In addition to the above two selections, students must demonstrate technical facility on their instrument by performing any one solo from one of the artists below on their respective instrument. Please note that all books are available from Jamey Abersold Music: http://www.jajazz.com/

CHARLIE PARKER OMNIBOOK
Description: Spiral bound book, known as The Bebopper's Bible. Over 60 solos of the master and father of modern music. Melodies and chords. Many can be played with Volume 6 of the Aebersold Play-a-long Series. Includes Confirmation, Now’s The Time, Yardbird Suite.

Trumpets:

Lee Morgan Solos
Description: Transcribed solos 18 classic solos including The Sidewinder, Ceora, Speed Ball, Lazy Bird, Moments Notice, Blue Train and Candy Bb Key

Trombones:

JJ Johnson Solos
Description: 13 Personal Favorites
These 13 solos were picked by JJ himself as representative of the best of his recorded output. Songs include Now's the Time, Blues in the Closet, Walkin', Billie's Bounce, Tune Up, Laura, Misteri.

Piano, Guitar, Bass
Students must prepare two selections from the titles below:
