When are auditions?

Auditions for Music, vocal and instrumental, will be held on February 21, 2010
Auditions for Dance will be held on February 21-22 2010
Portfolio Review for Visual Arts will be held on February 21, 2010

Can I just show up to the auditions?
No. Auditions and Portfolio Reviews are by appointment only.
Please submit your application (found online at www.lachsa.net under ADMISSIONS). You will be notified if you have passed the Academic Review and given an audition time. Application deadline for all departments is January 22, 2010 @5pm. See the next FAQ below for more details.

How does a student apply to the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA)?
Students are required to submit an application which can be downloaded from the website or picked up from the school office in Library North, Room 1034 on the campus of California State University Los Angeles. There are four steps in the application process.
  1. Submission of application materials by the application deadline, January 22, 2010 @ 5PM FOR ALL ARTS DEPARTMENTS and verification of the applicant’s record of academic success. Students are required to submit report cards, official or unofficial transcripts that document they have maintained at least a 2.0 grade point average, with no F grades, in the two previous semesters (2008-09 school year)
  2. Audition or a portfolio review (visual arts) by a jury of professional artists for students who have passed Step 1. Please see the appropriate arts area in this section for details about what is required at the auditions or portfolio reviews.
  3. A letter inviting conditional enrollment will be sent to applicants who scored highest in the auditions or portfolio reviews. Those selected applicants will be required to submit Fall 2009 and WInter 2010 semester report cards which much reflect minimum 2.0 grade point average with no F grades.
  4. Only when they have passed Steps 1, 2 and 3, may students be allowed to formally enroll at LACHSA.
My child's transcripts are not available yet for this year. Shall I send only last quarter and Spring 2009 grades?
No. Please send Fall AND Spring grades for the 2008-09 school year. So if your child is a rising 8th grader, we will need to see all of the 7th grade unofficial transcripts. If after the auditions, your child is offered a spot at LACHSA, it is provisional pending receipt of official transcripts.
 
I am currently a high school student. Can I transfer to LACHSA?.
The majority of our openings are for incoming 9th graders (170-175) with space in other grades made available by attrition. There is limited space available for incoming 10th graders. There are currently NO spaces in Theatre for grades 11 or 12  All prospective students must meet the same criteria regardless of grade entering:
  • Submit application by the due date.
  • Pass Academic review.
  • Attend the appointed audtion or portfolio review.
  • Demonstrate skill in their chosen art discipline.
Students wishing to enter LACHSA at an upper grade level must demonstrate skill equivalent to the LACHSA grade for which they are seeking admissions. In other words they will enter LACHSA at the 10, 11, or 12th grade skill level.)
 
What areas of art instruction does LACHSA provide?
The major art courses of study offered are Dance, Music (vocal and instrumental), Theatre and Visual Arts. Through electives, students in any of those arts areas may also study Television, Film, and/or Musical Theatre.
 
Can a student apply for Musical Theatre or Film classes only?
Not at this time. A student must be accepted into one of the four art departments. Once enrolled a student may choose to enroll in Film or Musical Theatre elective classes. (Note: advanced classes require the permission of the instructor and/or audition for entrance into the class)

Can students major in more than one art area?
No,.Students are able to major in only one art area. However, prospective students may audition for two (2) art areas maximum. The student can only be accepted into one art department. Students will receive two (2) audition appointment times if they apply for two (2) departments and auditions may be held on separate days. Students may request to audition/transfer to another art department AFTER being enrolled one year in the original department they were accepted into. No exceptions will be made regarding transferring earlier.
 
How much does LACHSA cost?
LACHSA is a tuition free public school. There is no charge for attending LACHSA. Admission is audition/portfolio review based and subject to specific academic criteria.
 
Can a student audition for more that one art department?
Yes! A student may choose to audition for up to two art departments in one school year. The student  must schedule a separate audition time for each art department and can only be admitted into one art department. LACHSA does not offer double majors or minors.
 
Do I have to prepare for my audition or portfolio review?
ABSOLUTELY YES! Entrance to LACHSA is extremely competitive. LACHSA can only admit a limited number of new students each school year. Review the audition/portfolio criteria as soon as possible. Each applicant is adjudicated by a number system. The applicants with the highest overall audition score and who have met all other application requirements, will be offered tentative enrollment. Be prepared to show the Adjudication Board your best and most complete work.
 
How do I prepare for my audition/portfolio review?
Go to the Admissions tab or  Arts tab on the website and click on the department you are interested in. There you will find a detailed breakdown of the criteria required for auditions and portfolio review.
 
Does LACHSA offer mid-year enrollment?
Very rarely a student can petition to enter mid-year.
 
I have questions! Is there an Open House that I can attend that will give me more information?
The LACHSA Information Night and Campus Day Tour has passed.
 
When are the auditions?
LACHSA General Auditions for the 2010-2011 school year will be held February 21, 2010.  Callbacks for Theatre and General Auditions for all other applicants is on February 21. Applicants who pass the academic requirements and have submitted a fully executed application will receive an audition time approximately one week before the auditions.

WHERE are the auditions?
Auditions will be held on the campus of Cal State Los Angeles.  You will receive detailed instructions with your audition appointment information.

How many openings are available for new students?
LACHSA has a total enrollment of approximately 600 students.. This year LACHSA expects to have spaces for 170-175 incoming freshmen. Spaces for other grades become available through attrition or departmental need.
 
When do applicants receive their audition results?
Final audition results will be mailed one month after the audition/portfolio review. 
 
Do I have to audition for LACHSA every year?
No. Students are not required to re-audition. However in some cases, students may be returned to District for academic or disciplinary reasons.
 
If I am not accepted to LACHSA this year, may I audition again?
LACHSA encourages applicants to submit again if they are not successful the first year they audition. Please note, however, that the most vacancies are in our 9th grade class. Openings for 10th and 11th  grade are only available due to attrition. LACHSA generally does not accept 12th grade incoming students.

Can I attend LACHSA if I do not reside in Los Angeles County?
Five percent of the student enrollment at LACHSA may reside outside of Los Angeles County. On an annual basis, one to two percent of the students have lived outside of Los Angeles County.
 
 
Does the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts provide Student Visas for international students?
No, we do not have the capabilities and logistics of processing Student Visas.

What are the school hours of operation?
School hours are from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Academic classes are held 8:00 a.m. – 12:35 and arts classes from 1:20-4:00 p.m.
 
I know that LACHSA offers the best in arts education but I am concerned about the Academics. Does LACHSA have a strong academic curriculum?
Definitly YES!
LACHSA is committed to nurturing artists AND scholars. LACHSA has been recognized every year since 2005, as a CBEE Scholar School- emonstrating
Superior Student Academic Achievement. LACHSA also maintains high API scores. This year they are 844.
 
What sort of academic curriculum does LACHSA offer?
LACHSA offers a standard College Preparatory curriculum with a full spectrum of Honors and AP courses to meet the A-G requirements needed for entrance to California State Universities and  UC's.
 
My child is in a Gifted program right now and while I want a strong arts curriculum, I want my child to attend a four year University not JUST a conservatory or Arts School. Can you give that kind of prepartion?
 
LACHSA does offer a full spectrum of AP and Honors course. Our students attend the finest universities, colleges and conservatories in the world. The class of 2009 had 95% of its graduates matriculate to such fine schools as: NYU, USC, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UCLA, UCMerced, Ithaca, Syracuse, Wagner, Boston College, Boston University, Indiana, Columbia, Notre Dame, Roosevelt not to mention Julliard, Parsons, Cooper Union, Art Center, CalArts, San Francisco Conservatory just to name a few. While we provide the tools. 2010 Early Admissions include acceptance to Brown, NYU, Trinity College, New Hampshire.
 
Is transportation provided for students?

No. LACHSA does not provide transportation. Approximately 50% of LACHSA students use public transportation and the other 50% use a carpool or are driven by their family. LACHSA provides a student list by zip code to those wishing to arrange carpools, after an information release form is signed by the parent or guardian. For students coming from the west side of Los Angeles by MetroLink, there is a MTA bus stop at the California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) that originates from Union Station. For students coming from the east side of Los Angeles, there is a MetroLink stop at CSULA. Detailed information about public transportation options is available from MTA or MetroLink websites or offices.
 
My child is eligible for the free lunch program. Does LACHSA have a cafeteria?
 
No. LACHSA does not have a cafeteria, but beginning in the 2010-2011 school year will offer eligible students free/reduced price meals. There is a food court on the CSULA that offers a variety of food. LACHSA shares the CSULA picnic eating areas located conveniently throughout the campus.
 
How safe is the high school on the campus of California State University Los Angeles (CSULA)?

The California State University (CSU) system statistics show that the CSULA campus is the safest in the CSU system. Safety patrols are regularly made by the University Police, Eagle Patrol (University students) and the high school staff. Arts High emphasizes safety and asks students to walk in pairs for added security in the evening hours, if still on campus. They may also request an Eagle Patrol escort to their car or bus or train station late at night by calling the University Police at (323) 343-3700.

My child is much younger than the university students on campus. Will my child have any contact with the adult college students?

The high school students attend classes in a set of classrooms, assigned to LACHSA during the academic and arts class periods, which are independent of the university students. The CSULA and LACHSA classes also have different starting and ending times. However, occasionally they may have contact with adult college students in the Food Court or bookstore.

Are students required to wear uniforms?

LACHSA students are not required to wear uniforms, but a dress code is in place.

Is the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts a magnet school?

No. The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts is in the category of specialized schools. California specialized schools are able to select their students. Magnet schools come under federal guidelines related to desegregation efforts. Magnet schools are required to provide bus transportation, while California specialized schools do not.
 
Can my child get college credit for attending LACHSA?
 
There are many CSULA services LACHSA students my obtain: check out priveleges and computer and internet access at the CSULA Library, lap swim at the CSULA, access to Health Services at the Student Health Center. However the CCP or College Credit Program will be discontinued as of January 2010.
